Rear shot of a Hyundai EV on the road

Many Hyundai EV models appeal to drivers because of their efficiency, all-electric power, and, of course, their reduced maintenance. But that doesn’t mean they don’t require any maintenance, and it’s important to know how their service needs differ from a gas-powered model. Lester Glenn Hyundai of Toms River highlights how to properly care for your electric vehicle.

How Do an EV’s Service Needs Differ from Gas-Powered Models?

A Hyundai EV has fewer moving parts than a gas-powered vehicle, resulting in reduced wear and tear of its mechanical components. Since they’re powered by battery-operated motors instead of a traditional engine, they don’t need oil changes or spark plug replacements, for example. They do still require tire and brake maintenance, fluid top-offs, and perhaps most importantly, battery service.

How to Keep Your EV Battery Healthy

One of the most effective ways you can take care of your electric vehicle is by protecting its battery. Consider parking it in the shade or in a garage to avoid exposing your battery to extreme temperatures that can reduce its lifespan. We recommend charging your battery to 80 or 90 percent instead of full capacity when you don’t require its full range for daily driving. Charging to 100 percent can reduce your battery’s ability to hold a full charge.

Brake Maintenance

Although regenerative braking can reduce the wear and tear of your electric vehicle’s brake pads, we recommend scheduling routine maintenance every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Avoid slamming your brakes to prevent damage to your vehicle’s rotors and calipers.

Fluid Maintenance

Although your Hyundai EV doesn’t need oil changes, you’ll still need to pay attention to your fluid levels. For instance, we recommend getting your electric vehicle’s battery coolant replaced every 60,000 miles.
